Orthodontist vs Cosmetic Dentist

Your smile is one of your greatest assets.  This is why it is so important to make sure you are not only brushing and flossing your teeth but have a dental team that will provide you the best possible care.  Sometimes it is confusing trying to figure out what kind of dentist you need.  For instance, should you see an orthodontist or cosmetic dentist help you?

An orthodontist is a dentist that has been trained in fixing dental irregularities. They are a licensed dentist that has completed two additional years of experience and training. They are able to fix overcrowding, crooked, or under or over bites.  Usually, your dentist will refer you to an orthodontist if they determine that your teeth cannot be fixed by them.

An orthodontist’s job is not just to fix your teeth due to cosmetic concerns.  Crooked and misaligned teeth can actually have far reaching effects on your overall teeth.  Speech problems, TMJ, lockjaw, and headaches are just some of the reasons that it is important to see an orthodontist if your dentist recommends one.

It is important to choose an orthodontist who is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics.  This ensures your orthodontist is lessened and has indeed completed the training necessary.

It is also recommended that every child around the age of 7 should see an orthodontist.  An orthodontist has the ability to detect any problems and fix them before they get out of hand.

A cosmetic dentist differs from an orthodontist in many ways.  The field of cosmetic dentistry combines the roles of a dentist and an orthodontist.  A cosmetic dentist specializes in bettering and improving the appearance of your teeth.

You may want to see a cosmetic dentist for teeth whitening.  Their office is sure to have all of the latest technology to whiten teeth in office.  They will explain to you your different options and side effects of different teeth whitening options.

A cosmetic dentist also specializes in both veneers and porcelain crowns.  If you are unhappy with the shape of your teeth or if your teeth are beyond repair, a cosmetic dentist is a great option.  They are able to fix your teeth without having to partake in the traditional orthodontics.

Cosmetic dentist are also experts at dentures.  You dentist will custom make your missing teeth.  These can be taken out of your mouth to be cleaned or while you sleep.  Dentures definitely take some getting used to, but they may be a great choice.

If you are interested in Invisalign, a cosmetic dentist can help you with this procedure. Invisalign is a process in which invisible trays are fitted to your mouth.  These trays, after several months, will realign your teeth. You will leave with a straighter smile.

If you are still unsure about whether you need to see an orthodontist or cosmetic dentist, your general dentist can help.  They will examine your teeth and help direct you in the path that makes the most sense for you and your teeth.
